Your private AC vehicle collects you from Varanasi Airport or the railway station and takes you first not into the city — but ten kilometres north of it, to Sarnath. This is where the Buddha came after his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree and gave his very first sermon to five disciples in 528 BC — the moment that set the wheel of Dharma in motion for the entire world. The Dhamek Stupa, built to mark the exact spot, rises 43 metres from the earth in a silence that still carries the weight of that teaching. We walk through the archaeological park, visit the Sarnath Museum with its magnificent Ashoka Lion Capital — now the national emblem of India — and sit with the story before the city of Shiva receives us.

As the sun drops below the western bank, Varanasi prepares for the most spectacular daily ritual on earth. At Dashashwamedh Ghat — the oldest and most sacred of the city's 84 ghats, where Brahma himself is said to have performed the first sacrifice — seven young priests take their positions on the stone platform as darkness falls. For forty-five minutes, fire, flower petals, incense, bells, and conch shells rise in perfect choreographed unison to honour the river Goddess Ganga. We watch from a private boat on the water — away from the bank crowds, with an unobstructed view of all seven priests and the fire reflecting in the river. There is no more moving ceremony in India.

Before the city is fully awake, we are on the water. The Ganges at dawn is a different river entirely — cloaked in mist, lit by the first orange thread of light on the far horizon, alive with rituals that have continued unbroken for three thousand years. From our private wooden boat we drift slowly past the ghats: pilgrims descending into the river waist-deep in prayer, sadhus in ash-covered stillness, wrestlers training in ancient akharas on the stone steps, flower garlands being released into the current, the gentle clang of temple bells through the fog. And always, in the distance, the burning ghat — Manikarnika — where the fires never go out, day or night, and where Hindus believe the body is returned to the five elements in the presence of Lord Shiva himself.

Kashi Vishwanath & the Old City

We disembark and walk directly from the ghats into the labyrinthine lanes of the old city — the lanes that Mark Twain called "older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend." These narrow alleys — some barely wide enough for two people to pass — are strung with marigolds, thick with incense smoke, busy with pilgrims, priests, silk merchants, and chai wallahs who have occupied the same spot for generations. At their sacred centre stands the Kashi Vishwanath Temple — the Golden Temple — one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva, rebuilt by Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar in 1780, its twin spires sheeted in gold donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. We visit the temple complex, walk the lanes with full context and story, and sit with the living heartbeat of the world's oldest city before your departure.
