We begin at the Jama Masjid — India’s largest mosque, commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1644, its red sandstone courtyard built to hold 25,000 worshippers. From the steps, Old Delhi spreads out below in every direction. Then we descend into it: a cycle rickshaw takes us through the narrow arteries of Chandni Chowk — the silver market that Shah Jahan built as the commercial heart of his capital — and onward to Khari Baoli, Asia’s largest wholesale spice market, where sacks of turmeric, chilli, and cardamom have lined the street since the seventeenth century.

We cross from the medieval city into the imperial one. Raj Ghat is the serene black marble platform on the banks of the Yamuna where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on 31 January 1948 — a place of profound stillness in the heart of the capital. From there we drive through the ceremonial heart of Lutyens’ Delhi: past the President’s House, along Kartavya Path, and past India Gate — the 42-metre sandstone arch that commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died in the First World War.

Humayun’s Tomb

Built in 1570 by the grieving empress Bega Begum for her husband, the Mughal emperor Humayun, this is the monument that changed architecture forever. It was the first structure in India to use the Persian double dome on such a scale, the first to use red sandstone as its primary material, and the direct architectural ancestor of the Taj Mahal. The charbagh garden — divided into four quadrants by water channels — was the template for every great Mughal garden that followed. We walk through it slowly, understanding it not as a ruin but as a living blueprint.
Construida en 1570 por la desconsolada emperatriz Bega Begum para su esposo, el emperador mogol Humayun, este es el monumento que cambió la arquitectura para siempre. Qutub Minar
Qutub Minar
The oldest surviving monument in Delhi, and one of the most extraordinary objects ever built by human hands. The Qutub Minar is a 73-metre tapering tower of red sandstone and marble, begun in 1193 by Qutb ud-Din Aibak to announce the arrival of Islamic rule in the subcontinent. Its five storeys are covered in intricate calligraphic carvings of Quranic verses. Inside the complex stands the Iron Pillar — a 6-metre column forged in the 4th century AD whose iron has not rusted in over 1,600 years, a metallurgical mystery that modern science has not fully explained.
