Agra Fort is a walled city within a city — the seat of Mughal power for a century before the capital moved to Delhi. We walk through the Amar Singh Gate, into the Diwan-i-Am where emperors held public audience, and into the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan spent the final eight years of his life imprisoned by his own son, his only view the distant white dome of the monument he built for love.

An optional stop at the jewel-box mausoleum that inspired the Taj Mahal itself. Built in 1628 — fourteen years before the Taj — the Itmad-ud-Daulah was the first Mughal structure ever built entirely in white marble with pietra dura inlay. Every mosaic you see in the Taj Mahal was perfected here first. Small, intimate, and utterly extraordinary. If you choose to include this stop, entry is covered.
